What is Compostable(Biodegradable)Packaging?
At EKA Packaging, we consider compostable and biodegradable packaging to be the same category of truly sustainable materials. Our packaging is made from Polylactic Acid (PLA) and corn starch, which completely break down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass under proper composting conditions, including appropriate temperature, humidity, and microorganisms. This process leads to the breakdown of the material by microorganisms, resulting in the production of carbon dioxide, water, and biomass that returns to the ecological environment.
Our compostable film has been certified with the EN13432 and ASTM D6400 standards, ensuring it meets international standards for compostable materials. Unlike some competitors' products that may not fully degrade as claimed, our materials are guaranteed to be both industrially and home compostable while maintaining a shelf life of one year.

The predominant base material for our packaging is PLA, an eco-friendly material made from sugar cane, starch, and corn, created using renewable green sources. While biodegradable packaging is not recyclable (as its purpose is different from recyclable packaging), it represents an exciting development in flexible barrier packaging and fulfills the dream of cost-efficient, non-petroleum plastic production.
We acknowledge that compostable materials require specific conditions to break down and may not compost in regular landfills. Many areas still lack infrastructure for composting facilities, but our materials are designed to decompose effectively when exposed to the right environmental conditions.

What is EPI Partial Degradable Packaging?
Our EPI partial degradable packaging uses photo-oxidative technology where light and heat initiate breakdown. The material contains EPI additives that oxidatively break polymer chains when exposed to the environment, gradually reducing molecular weight to form brittle films that disintegrate.
It maintains conventional plastic's full functionality, durability and extended shelf life during use. The EPI additive ensures normal plastic performance until disposal, when sunlight/heat trigger controlled degradation.
This provides a practical middle ground between traditional plastics and full biodegradables. The material keeps its strength and protective qualities throughout its service life before starting to degrade, offering both performance and reduced environmental impact.

What is GRS Recyclable Packaging?
When making recyclable plastic bags, they are usually mixed with a certain proportion of recycled materials to reduce costs and achieve environmental protection purposes. These recycled materials include discarded polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) products, waste plastic bags, discarded plastic containers, etc., which will turn waste into treasure and then be made into bags.
Recyclable packaging like our GRS-certified solutions comprises materials specifically engineered for post-use recovery, primarily using plastics that maintain functional performance while supporting resource conservation. These materials are designed for efficient sorting and reprocessing through established collection systems, enabling them to be made into new products through multiple life cycles. By diverting waste from landfills and reducing virgin material demand, they deliver important sustainability benefits while maintaining practical utility for various packaging applications.

Compostable Packaging: Safety & Regulatory Compliance
-
Compostable packaging must meet specific standards to ensure proper breakdown under controlled conditions, categorized primarily into industrial and home composting. Industrial composting requires high temperatures and managed environments, while home composting relies on natural ambient conditions. Key regulations, such as the European RoHS Directive 2015/863/EU, restrict hazardous substances in materials, ensuring safer end-of-life disposal. Additionally, packaging intended for children’s products may fall under Directive 2009/48/EC (EU Toy Safety Directive), which mandates strict chemical safety requirements. For testing harmful element migration (e.g., lead or cadmium), EN 71-3:2019 serves as a critical standard, particularly if the packaging has toy-like components. These regulations help consumers and businesses identify truly eco-friendly and safe packaging solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions
1、Do compostable plastics truly decompose?
1、Do compostable plastics truly decompose?
Compostable bioplastics are designed to fully break down into nutrient-rich soil, unlike conventional plastics that persist for centuries. While industrial composting facilities provide optimal conditions for rapid decomposition, home composting may take significantly longer depending on environmental factors and product composition.
2、What materials are used in biodegradable packaging?
2、What materials are used in biodegradable packaging?
Our eco-friendly bags are crafted from plant-based polymers, primarily derived from sustainable crops like corn starch, cassava, and agricultural byproducts. This contrasts sharply with traditional plastics that rely on fossil fuels, offering a renewable alternative with a lower environmental footprint.
3、How can I distinguish compostable plastic from conventional plastic?
3、How can I distinguish compostable plastic from conventional plastic?
Compostable plastic typically has a matte finish and softer texture than regular plastic - the easiest way to confirm is by checking for official certification labels.
4、What's the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
4、What's the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
At our company, we consider compostable and biodegradable materials to be identical - both are fully degradable solutions made from PLA and corn starch. These materials can undergo both industrial and home composting, while maintaining a shelf life of 1 year.
5、What’s the difference between at-home and industrial compostables?
5、What’s the difference between at-home and industrial compostables?
At-home (ambient) compostable bags break down in residential composters within a set time frame. Industrial compostables require specialized facilities, like those managed by cities, to decompose effectively.
6、Do compostable bags break down in landfills?
